Taxes and privilege

Better late than never. I managed to get my accounts to the accountant last night - hopefully in time for him to get my tax return in before the end of the month. The advantage to not earning much is that I don't have to pay much in the way of tax but... er... reverse that and there are obvious disadvantages to not paying much tax.
Good job I set more store by things which are not based on finance!
And speaking of which... I took a look at the privilege meme thing that's been buzzing round LJ. Skewed or what? What a load of old twaddle. I could tick few of the boxes, but I feel that I've had a great deal of privilege in my life. How are you underprivileged if your parents didn't go to university? How are you underprivileged if your parents didn't set up a trust fund for you? How are you underprivileged if you did not have original art in the house? The boxes i could tick were more or less meaningless. How are you privileged because all the clothes you had before your 18th birthday were new? I happened to be an only child, so hand-me-downs from siblings (or even cousins) were not an option... and my mum could sew.
I have been uber-privileged in my life to have supportive parents, a stable if not wealthy background, a super-granny (to balance the mad one), the best partner a person could wish for, fantastic level-headed kids, marvellous friends, a brilliant job that took me round the world for twenty years (even if it didn't pay me much money) and plenty of opportunities to be creative. I could ask for more, but it would be greedy.
