jacey: (mad)
Is everyone all right?

Because when a stone house the density of ours shakes like that, someone else is in trouble.

00.57 a.m. a huge rattling shake and my whole office vibrated.

UK residents speak up, please.

Apparently the epicentre of the quake was 30 miles south of Hull and it was felt as far south as London and across the Midlands. So though it wasn't quite as big as the Dudley quake in 2002 (4.8) it was a lot closer.

Earthquake stats for the UK
6.1 biggest ever recorded, about 120km off Great Yarmouth, 1931
5.4 biggest on land in Lleyn, north Wales, 1984
5.1 in Bishop's Castle, Shropshire, in 1990
4.2 in Warwick, Sept 2000
4.1 shook Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, Oct 2001

Ho-hum, back to work.

They seem to have changed their minds. Last night's quake was 5.3 which makes it within .1 of the biggest quake on land we've had in the UK since records began.

The BBC site ways: The main 10-second quake, which struck at 0056 GMT at a depth of 15.4km (9.6 miles), was the biggest recorded example since one with a magnitude of 5.4 struck north Wales in 1984.
