You're supposed to embolden the ones you've read, but [livejournal.com profile] ferlonda  asterisked them and so I've foillowed suit. Interesting to see that my list overlaps [livejournal.com profile] ferlonda 's by about 90% except that I've read fewer of what might be considered American classics. I also admit that I read some of them so long ago that I can barely remember more than a hazy impression. I was forced (at gunpoint almost) to read Hardy at school and I hated it with a passion. i confess not only have I never read anything by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, but I hadn't heard of him either until I googled. Any list is subjective, but where's Ernest Hemingway? Why no 'Mrs Gaskell' and what about 'Jonathan Livingstone Seagull?' Why no Agatha Christie? Who the hell is Rohinton Mistry? Why no V S Naipaul? How come Enid Blyton's 'Faraway Tree' gets a mention, but not 'Noddy' or 'Famous Five'? (Let's be honest why mention Blyton at all?) How come there are four Jane Austens and only four Charles Dickens? Why are some (Harry Potter, His Dark Materials Chronicles of Narnia and, for goodness sake, The Complete Works of Shakespeare) bundled as a series? What if you've only read six Harry Potters, or you missed 'Love's Labours Lost' when you went through your Shakespeare phase?

Anyway it served to take my mind off the excruciatingly frustrating work day I had today, so thanks, [livejournal.com profile] ferlonda .
