Booklog 1/2021:Simon R Green: The Best Thing You Can Steal – Gideon Sable #1

Gideon Sable is a thief – he even stole his name. He specialises in things that are impossible to steal and to this end he plans a heist to steal the best thing in the collection of the worst man in the world. For this he needs to put together a team who can do the impossible, starting with his ex-girlfriend, Annie Anybody, mistress of disguise, plus the Damned, the Ghost and the Wild Card. This is interesting for the characters (and we do get their backstories). To be honest it's a neat idea and it kept me reading, but it didn't blow me away.

Booklog 2/2021: Liz Williams: Blackthorn Winter - Comet Weather #2

This is Liz Williams' follow up to the excellent Comet Weather, picking up just a short while after the events in the first book. As before the main characters are the four fallow sisters and their partners. Bee is looking after the family home in Somerset with her boyfriend, Dark, who is a ghost. Luna, the youngest sister is temporarily at home, growing a baby but actually intends to go back on the road as soon as the baby is old enough, with her boyfriend, Sam, in a horse-drawn wagon. Serena, a dress designer, and Stella, are both in London at Serena's place, together with Serena's daughter Belle, and her actor boyfriend, Ward. It seems as though the supernatural world hasn't finished with the sisters yet. One by one they get drawn across the divide into other worlds (and dumped back again). Serena's previous live in lover (who happens to be Ward's cousin) has unaccountably gone missing. On top of that her new fashion collection has been ripped to shreds and there's a demon sitting on the mantelpiece. Enter a couple of new character, a green-skinned girl found (by Bee) in the local church yard, andAce, who is fascinating – a down-at-heel wizard. This is a deeply engrossing book written by someone who really knows her magic and folklore. The action moves from Somerset to London and back again, with side trips into occult worlds, including Britain's Roman past. Highly recommended.

Booklog 3/2021:

Not much happens in this book but it happens (or not) in an interesting way. Venetia Lanyon has been stuck on the Yorkshire estate she was born on for all of her twenty-five years – firstly because her father was a grim recluse, secondly, her older brother who joined the army and after their father died, left Venetia in charge, and thirdly because her younger brother, Aubrey, is a brilliant scholar but crippled by a diseased hip and Venetia has, up to now, been standing in as a parent. When Aubrey has a riding accident he's rescued by their recently returned neighbour, Jasper Demerel, whose reputation as an out-and-out rake is well known. Against all odds Venetia and Demerel become good friends. He courts her and there is undeniable attraction even though all Venetia's friends warn her against him. An unexpected turn of events precipitated by her older brother sends Venetia on a trip to London where she learns a family secret that changes everything. Heyer is always interesting to read, but this is not one of my favourites, I spent a great deal of the early part of the book waiting for something to happen.
