Irene is given a secret task by the Library's upper echelons, kill Alberich, the Library's arch enemy, who has now been revealed as her father. Other librarians lower down the pecking order are told she has gone rogue, so she only has herself, her lover, Kai, (a dragon in human form), and their friend, Vale, the great detective, to rely on. Irene searches for Alberich, and for her own origin story (because the Library is all about stories). If her father is Alberich, who is her mother? She ends up looking for the origin of the Library, as well, and the Library doesn't like that. Everybody's life is on the line as Irene's search reveals more than she wants to know. Se can't unknow things, however, and this is something she has to see through to the bitter end. This is certainly the end to this particular story arc, though looking at Ms Cogman's website she says it may not necessarily be the end of the series, just the end of this season.

Audiobook. This takes place before the events in Season One of the new Picard TV series. Picard is prised away from the Enterprise and made into an Admiral in order to take charge of helping the Romulans to evacuate people from worlds within the blast range of the Romulan sun, which is soon going super-nova. This chronicles the trials and tribulations of Picard, on the star ship Verity, as he gathers around him new crewmembers including Raffi Musiker, his new Number One. (This is as much her story as Picard's) Star Fleet is throwing everything at the Romulan evacuation effort, though the Romulans themselves are still very wary of the hand of friendship being held out by their old (untrusted) enemy. The task in hand is made doubly difficult by Federation politicians and the Tal Shiar, the Romulan secret service. It looks as though there are four books in this sequence that lead into the TV series, but the second features Riker, and the third (not published until June 2022) features Rios (whom we meet in the TV series). The fourth book isn't listed yet. I'm not sure about the rest of the series, but Una McCormac's The Last Best Hope captures Picard beautifully and the narration by Robert Petkoff works well. He captures Picard's inflections well. Recommended.

This was my first introduction to Terry Pratchett many years ago, and still remains one of my favourites. Mort is looking for a job but he's somewhat taken aback when Death himself, a skeleton in a black cloak, offers to make him his apprentice. Once he finds out he doesn't have to be dead himself to take on the job, he begins to relax. Death, who ALWAYS SPEAKS IN CAPITAL LETTERS, has a daughter called Ysabell, rides a white horse called Binky and has a room full of life-timers. It's all going very well until Mort, grim reaper in training, takes on the duty by himself.

There are some lovely moments. When Death gives Mort the afternoon off, he gives him a bag of pennies to spend. Since Death is not materialistic Mort asks how he gets pennies and DEATH replies, 'IN TWOS, MOSTLY.' If you haven't read Terry Pratchett before (and if not, where have you been?) this is a good starting place.
