The first in a trilogy about Morgan, also known as Morgana. Growing up at Tintagel Morgan, the youngest of Duchess Igraine of Cornwall’s daughters, witnesses the treachery perpetrated when Merlin disguises Uther Pendragon as her father, Gorlois, Duke of Cornwall, and sneaks him into the castle to lie with her mother and father the future King Arthur, Uther, having killed Cornwall’s king marries Igraine (forcibly) and becomes ‘father’ to the girls. Growing up and hating Uther, the fiercely intelligent Morgan takes solace in learning. She falls in love with a lowly knight and is banished to a convent – finding solace in even more education, especially in the healing arts. She he has done to her two older sisters, Morgause and Elaine Uther eventually marries Morgan off to the King of Gaul, at first not a bad match but increasingly deteriorating to the point that Morgan needs to make her escape. This fairly rattles along as Morgan grows up, eventually learning that she doesn’t need to submit to the whims and will of men. Very well narrated by Vanessa Kirby, this is a compelling listen.
