What a disappointment. The trailer made it look like a rom-com (which is what we were in a mood to see) and though there were a few wryly funny moments, mainly due to the discomfort of the main couple talking about intimate issues, it was mostly a glacially slow examination of a marriage gone stale and efforts on the wife's part to revive it. A bit excruciatingly detailed at times. (Hey - a 12A rating.) It was beautifully and subtly acted by Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones, but it was a talking heads/character-study movie about a situation. Plot-lite. Very. I don't think I'd have minded if the trailer had sold it with the right picture on the tin. but almost every light moment in the movie was in the trailer.

In contrast Love Actually was on telly tonight.Very nearly perfect and Much More Fun.

If Meryl Streep is in it, it's usually depressing. (She's such a fine performer, but whew, I do not care for most of her material.)

There are few things worse than Serious masquerading as romcom.

It wasn't awful, it just wasn't what I expected from the trailer. I certainly wouldn't have gone to see it if the trailer had given an accurate idea of the movie, which, of course, is why the trailer picked out all the less intense bits.
