Movie of the Week: The Life of Pi

jaceyI can certainly see why this movie is winning awards. The cinematography is utterly gorgeous (in 2D). The actors are absolutely perfectly cast. All four actors who play Pi at different stages of his life are excellent, but special mention to Suraj Sharma who is the Pi in the boat with the tiger.
Does anyone not know the gist of the story? Pi and his family are on a freighter moving their Zoo from India to America when a storm wrecks the ship and leaves Pi as the only human survivor trapped in a lifeboat with a ferocious adult Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. The fact that a story so slight can hold your attention for so long is down to both excellent writing and direction.
Looking at the IMDB cast and crew list the special effects crew is enormous and although they must have used a real tiger for some shots (there was a tiger trainer on the crew) the animation/CGI was flawless. The tiger was at all times totally believable and it's impossible to tell where the real tiger stops and starts.
There's a nice little twist at the end which poses an interesting question.
