We've been planning to get a puppy - ostensibly for Best Beloved's birthday. He's been talking about it ever since we retired form international touring when Artisan finished. I thought he wanted another white German Shepherd like Seamus, our first dog, but while doing some research and much googling he found this breeder and fell in love with Ando, a black and tan dog with a strong red colouration. There's a litter due next week and we've sent off a deposit and ordered a pup - specifically a short-haired male black and tan which will hopefully have Ando's colouring.

Needless to say both Ando and the bitch, Maddie, have good hip-scores and elbows, and Ando has tested negative for the haemophilia gene. These are excellent show dogs, but we're not into showing we just want a bright, intelligent, happy puppy with every chance of growing up into a sociable gentleman.

If all goes well the pups are due in just over a week and we'll be able to see them (and parents) for the first time at around 4 weeks old.

Scroll down here for a pic of mum and dad, Ando and Maddie.

If Maddie doesn't have enough boys in the litter for all the interested prospective puppy-parents there's a litter due from Ando and Foss in October and the breeders will transfer our deposit to that one.

Thinking about puppy names now. Not sure why, but BB favours Diesel. It's not a bad name - and has the advantage that it's got a sound that's not easy to mix up with other likely dog names unless anyone at training classes has a dog called Weasel. Name suggestions?

This was Seamus...

Seamus is so beautiful. Congratulations on the pending new addition to the family!

Wow, beautiful dogs! And the breeders certainly are to be commended for the diet and handling they talk about. I think Diesel is a neat name for a dog. Very butch. :)

Those dogs are really handsome, as is Seamus.

I'm not at all sure why you would want to call a dog after a fuel though...

Maybe he's named after the man who invented the diesel engine - or the film star Vin Diesel. After all, it was a German surname (and probably still is) before it became a fuel.

Sorry. I should have put a smiley on the end of my comment as I was mostly joking.

Having said that, perhaps because we've driven diesel vehicles for years, fuel would be my first association. Perhaps float the name past a few more people to guage their reaction?

A friend of mine recently filled the tank of his van with petrol rather than diesel and as a result the band was three hours later than expected to play MY festival! We don't let him forget it, of course. If we called the dog Diesel he'd figure it was entirely to snip at him... in a good way of course!

I like the vibes the breeder gives off - beautiful dogs. I'd wait with naming any anmal until I have met it - names are such a personal thing.

Names are personal, but if we can name the puppy before its fifth week it can have the same 'Sunday Best' name as its pet name. besides, even with children you usually pick a name before the birth (even though you may sometimes change it afterwards).

I met a dog named Diesel recently. Seemed to work!

When I showed Trevor this he made a most disconcerting sound like a Japanese schoolgirl, which I think can be deciphered as 'soooooooo cuuuuuute!'

Only someone who keeps Rotties could describe German Sheperds as 'cute.'
:-)
(Though the puppies are, of course.)
