Like [livejournal.com profile] heleninwales , I was without connectivity all day (thank you, Demon Internet) so it was a good job I'd arranged to go to the cinema with H this afternoon. We went to see Surrogates - about which I knew nothing in advance. Bruce Willis solving crime in a world where everyone stays indoors and interacts with the world and each other via their robot selves and a virtual-reality type link. A pleasant diversion but not an earth-shattering movie.

Nice to see H back from her trip to Canada and the USA. We're starting Artisan rehearsals for the reunion tour Monday after next.

I suspected that the problem with Demon might be quite serious when I went online using the mobile broadband dongle and discovered that I couldn't access my Demon mail via the web. It had been fine all morning though, so it sounds like you were even worse off than us.

We don't get to the cinema all that often, sadly, as it's a long drive to the nearest one with any choice. It has to be something quite special to tempt us there, or alternatively, we just have to fancy a day out with a film thrown in almost as an extra.

Re the cinema... BB is not very film-friendly. He probably only goes once or twice a year - and that's when I insist. But I like cinema and make a point of going with H almost every week depending on her availability and my workload. We do Orange Wednesdays (2 for 1) and see everything vaguely SFnal that comes out (sometimes quite indiscriminately).

On this occasion, though, BB and I made a day of it as it was my birthday treat. The film was in the afternoon in York (about an hour away) so we went in early, parked up on Marygate and walked through the Abbey Gardens, did brunch before the film in the riverside bistro at the cinema (City Screen), then had a quick visit to Borders bookshop - just around the corner before the movie. Afterwards we dashed to M&S just before closing time and I scored two lightweight purple sweaters in their Cashmillon range, then we ambled along the Shambles and had an early dinner at Cafe Concerto - one of my favourite places to eat in York. Quirky and cheerful and within sight of the Minster. A perfect day for me and BB suffered it with good grace.

I've had a few outages over the last few months so I don't let it rattle me. I'm not in a position of having any vital reason to be on-line so I just get on with stuff. I think I lost connectivity around lunchtime and it was back when I checked around 10pm.

I do a lot of (music tour booking) business by email, so if it goes down I'm always a bit stumped, however not being on the web is occasionally good for me, so as long as it's only a day - or half a day - I can manage. I've always got plenty to do.

It's not until next July, but we're recording a new album and have not sung together since November 2005, so need to make sure the old polish and verve is well-honed.

Don't worry, none of my friends are likely to miss out on the news updates. I'll get pathetically boring about it as it gets nearer the time.

BIRTHDAY! Yikes. My bad. Happy belated birthday! It sounds like you had a wonderful day. York is fabulous. :)

Have you seen District 9? dadgaderie and I went to see it a while ago and it was pretty good- certainly no boring moments. One or two little plot holes but otherwise, very good.

Thanks for the birthday wishes.

You'll recognise songs from the album.

Plus BB has started to write more.

I haven't seen Distric 9 yet. H has been away in the US and Canada so I lost my cinema buddy for amonth. To be hnest I thought it was going to be a bit like Cloverfield. I was especially put off by the 'documentary style' description. Is it better than Cloverfield? Should I see it soon?

It's not a bit like Cloverfield, certainly not a "horror" or "monster" movie. There is a small amount of documentary style filming but overall it's humans meet aliens, "rescue" aliens, aliens escape humans. We found it riveting and fairly well written- certainly well acted. I'd see it on the big screen if nothing else than for the spectacular CGI effects which are very difficult to pick out of the live action. And there is a LOT of live action- the pace never lets up through the whole thing. We really liked it a lot.
