I had to comment on the two American questions! Not only American but a young one at that. When I was a child we went by train to my grandmother's every summer. My father (a train lover) talked wistfully about the days before WWII when you could get to nearly every city and town in central Kentucky by a combination of main line trains and interurban trains.

I own a gun. It's badly in need of the services of an expert gunsmith since the cylinder is rusted in place. It's a pearl-handled Smith and Wesson that belonged to my great-great-aunt, born in 1864, and it probably dates to the 1880s.

I must be one of the few Brits who grew up with guns in the house. My dad was a 'hobby' gun dealer. It all started when he inherited the Smith and Wesson that his uncle picked up on one of the first world war battlefields and brought home. In order to get it legalised and registered he went through the process of registering as a dealer with the local police (not easy even in those days - and of course wouldn't bve allowed now). He bought and sold a few pieces he thought particularly interesting. His pride and joy was a Colt.45 numbered in the early 8000s. Apparently the first 8000 went to the US cavalry so this was one of the first that was sold to the public when the gin fiorst came out.

He rarely had ammunition, though. Even then the regulations were very strict. The guns had to be kept in a safe within a steel-lined room (in our case the cupboard under the stairs) which had to have specific quality locks etc.

He did love his guns. They were more like toys to him, I think. (Though he wasn't inexperienced and took them seriously, as anyone who'd fought through World War Two would do.) However when he needed a way out from bone cancer they were his first resort.

My mum just asked the police to take them all away after he died and I can't say I blame her.
