Just got back home from ten days of Artisan gigs in the southern half of the country. Annoyingly I didn't find one place where I could plug my computer in and receive and send email. I managed to download a couple of times but - something to do with the way Turnpike sends via pop-3 - I couldn't send any mail at all from my regular address. Bummer! Yes I could have done web mail, but Demon's web mail interface is appalling. Grrrr! After 14 years of Demon I'm beginning to think it's time to grit my teeth, change from Turnpike to Thunderbird and change ISPs.

Anyhow... gigs were good (though our Hampshire fans didn't seem to think much of Gosport on a pissing wet Monday night). We had a couple of good festival appearances - both concerts in Wallingford and Swanage being in really lovely churches - and good gigs at Lee Mill (Devon), St Neots, Dorking, Stoney Stratford and Donyatt (Somerset).

Had one day off and visited Number One Daughter and her husband in Twickenham. G now has a seven month bump. I'm going to be a granny in November.

A couple of times we passed close by [livejournal.com profile] mevennen  and [livejournal.com profile] charlieallery and I wished I'd had the foresight to have their phone numbers with me. Not wishing to pounce unannounced, I waved as I passed by.

Just three more Artisan gigs now and then immediately away to Milford in the wilds of Snowdonia.

I would never have abandoned Turnpike even when I abandoned Demon, if it only had SSL, which Gmail insists on.

What did you change to? I like Turnpike, but not being able to post from anywhere except home is a bit of a disadvantage! I guess there must be a way to reconfigure it, but I haven't had the time to sit down and get to grips with it while I've been out?

Problem is: Demon has stopped supporting Turnpike and sooner or later I'm going to be forced to change. I think someone has written a patch so it works with Windows 7, but beyond that who knows.

But I've had Turnpike for nearly 15 years. Changing is going to be a wrench... and I'm going to have to make sure I can import my Turnpike address book. I really don't want to use Microsoft. I need a spare few days to sit down and really look at Thunderbird properly.

Spare Few Days? Yeah, right!

You can reconfigure it, and I have (since I retain a Demon dialup account but normally use the addresses over our BT broadband), but it might be difficult to explain without being there in person. It also depends on exactly how you're connecting and what you're connecting to -- the real problem nowadays is that a lot of mailservers insist on you pre-registering any email address you want to use to send, as an anti-spam measure, so if you're camping on someone else's broadband, this can be an issue.

If you're just using ordinary dial-up, it *ought* to work out of the box, but ppint reports that dialup is frequently broken these days.

Yes i am camping out on other people's broadband... rarely the same broadband or wi-fi two days running. It may even be the 'free wifi' at a hotel or mototrway sewrvices or Weatherspoons pub. My Demon account at home is on the family netword through a home hub. We have one of their home-office accounts.

Thanks. It's a boy... but they haven't settled on a name yet.
