Orange Twofers

When my ex bandmate, H, is not away gigging we make a point of doing the cinema on a Wednesday afternoons, taking advantage of the Orange 241 deal. We generally go an see every SF and fantasy movie out there and as a result have sat and munched popcorn through some crap (Dragonballs), walked out of Tron 2, and caught some good stuff we might not otherwise have made an effore to see (Ironman 1 and 2).

Just occasionally it's a thin week and there are no SF/F movies on offer that we haven't already seen, so we cave and see something else. This week we made the horrible mistake of going to see 'Bad Teacher'. The trailer looked OK, but regrettably it showed all of the best bits (there aren't that many but they can just about scrape enough to make a trailer) and none of the worst bits. I recommend you avoid this movie like the plague unless you really want to see Justin Timberlake dry-humping Cameron Diaz in the most charmelss, unfunny and unerotic manner possible.

This should have been funny. Sadly it just sucked.

Thanks for the warning, not that I was likely to see something like that. I shall instead dig out my copy of the 80s classic Summer School and enjoy the comic timing of Mark Harmon (still pretty much the college quarterback) and Kirstie Alley (being very much *not* Saavik). ;)

I never saw that. In fact, when I started watching NCIS I couldn't remember what Mark Harmon had been in before... and he's so pretty it would be worth catching up with some of his old stuff. H tells me he was in Moonlighting, but my memory of that is vague at best - though I do recall enjoying it at the time.

He's a california boy, son of a Heismann Trophy winner (American football) and season-winning quarterback for UCLA, so he was already high-profile and got a few early movie parts after leaving college. What made him a name was St Elsewhere, not least that his character was the (hetero) Doctor that got aids. 2 films with Kirstie Alley riding high on the Khan wave - Summer School and Prince of Bel Air - both also with the guy who now plays Lt Roberts in JAG.

The one you may know is the Sean Connery film The Presidio, also with Meg Ryan. Mark Harmon is the MP-turned-civilian-cop who solves the murder and wins the Marine Colonel's daughter. Good film.

The role that got him the NCIS part was 4 episodes of The West Wing where he plays a secret service agent. Bellisario wasn't interested until they showed him that and then he was sold.

Also, there are 2 made-for-TV movies where he plays real life serial killers, Ted Bundy in one, and they're both very creepy roles, excellently played. And one film opposite Elizabeth Taylor - Streetcar Named Desire. Not that I'm into such films normally, but now I'm intrigued to watch the Paul Newman version based on the IMDB reviews comparing Harmon's performance with his.

Oh yes, my Mark Harmon collection is about the same size as my Alan Rickman collection. ;)

Ah, you rock. Mark Harmon _and_ Alan Rickman! I must admit, though, that looking at the photos on IMDB, Mark Harmon is infinitely better looking with silver hair and a few more years on his face. He was almost too pretty when he was younger.

Other than the NCIS box sets, I have 24 Mark Harmon titles, and not counting the Harry Potter films, 31 Alan Rickman titles. Hmmm, there's a lot more MH stuff, but so much of it is TV and not on DVD. :(

Amusingly, in Louis L'Amour's Crossfire Trail, MH plays the suave baddy to Tom Selleck's cowboy Hero and in Quigley Down Under (classic cowboy film) it's AR playing the suave baddy against Tom Selleck. Iirc, Mr Selleck gets to punch both of them. :)

It's an interesting way to watch films I'd never otherwise see - AR's Snowcake and MH's I'll Remember April, both excellent mainstream films.

I have to say the trailer was enough to put me off. I do rather like the look of Bridesmaids, though.

I thought the trailer had a few laughs in it and H used to teach so she was quite drawn to it as an alternative to not doing our movie afternoon, but the Bridesmaids trailer didn't do a thing for me. We were trying to avoid Transformers, but both said afterwards that we should have risked that rather than suffer Bad Teacher.

The reviews on Bridesmaids have been better than the trailer and imply it might actually be about women (rather than men as talked about by women).
