If memory serves me (and it doesn't always) this was the story you brought to my first Milford, back in 2003. Well done on finding it a well-deserved home.
Did I? For some reason 2003 is a blank in my records, so it might have been. If that was your first Milford, do you have the full list of who brought what? (Email it to me if you do, pretty-please.) I know I took 'The Outsiders', but I didn't have any record of taking a second piece.
If it was Floodlust, it's been much changed since then - particularly in length - as it started out almost twice as long. It was originally written, and got the green light, for a dark fantasy DAW anthology which seriously overran its word count, but they liked it and wanted to hang on to it for a suitable future anthology. After a few years I realised I'd forgotten about it and so had they, so I withdrew it and promptly didn't do anything about it for a few years. (Remember I'm crap at marketing.) Then when Alma's River antho came up I recalled I'd never done anything with it and I'd always liked it, so I gave it a thorough re-jig. And the rest, as they say, is history.
I know I'd sell a lot more stories if I actually sent the things out. Debs gave us all a real kick up the paragraphs a couple of Milfords ago. She sends out about 20 subs a month and at any one time has about 50 shorts submitted. I know it works. And if the stories are sitting on your hard-drive they're not going to sell themselves, are they? So full of Debbish enthusiasm I sent out a whole load of subs last summer and sold three (including this) in one month.
Of course, since then... Well, I've been working on the novel, haven't I? :-) (Makes note to sub some more short stories SOON!)
