We missed our regular cinema trip last week, but H and I thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon outing this week to see the new Shelock Holmes. It certainly didn't disappoint, though a followup to such a brilliant first offering as the 2009 movie was always going to be problematic. Can they do it again?

Yes, I think so.

The casting - Robert Downey Jnr as Sherlock and Jude Law as Watson - was as good as ever, with the usual supporting cast of Geraldine James as Mrs Hudson and Kelly Reilly as Mary enhanced by Srephen Fry as Mycroft and Noomi Rapace as Simza replacing Rachel McAdams as the female interest (playing Irene Adler). This time Moriarty (Jared Harris) is the upfront villain and Holmes and Watson are playing cat and mouse with him across Europe as war threatens..

The pacing is fast, the dialogue snappy, the jokes amusing. All in all a good couple of hours of entertainment. Maybe Jared Harris could have been a little more chilling as Moriarty, but that's my only quibble. Apart from actually tying the knot with Watson, Mary was a bit sidelined, as was Inspector Lestrade and the delightful (if little seen this time) Constable Clark.

Looking forward to the next one.
