If you've not heard the whole of 'Song of Steel' then it's well worth either getting on CD or checking to see if the BBC still have it up on Listen Again. It's part of the six part New radio Ballads done by JT a few years ago, following in the footsteps of the Ewan McColl ones in the 50s/60s, using vox-pop clips from people on the front-lines of history and making songs grow out of people's stories.
He's doing great things musically. He wrote the songs and is currently involved in the various 'Warhorse' productions around the world: in the West End, on Broadway and soon to be opening in Australia. Unity - his frst solo album from the early noughties - is stil one of my favourite CDs of all time.
I first met him in 1993 when we were recording the 'Breathing Space' album and he was on the point of going back to film the second in the Sharpe series. (Still surprised that the first had been such a hit that they'd recalled them all for a second.) Whenever we've crossed paths he's been fit, focused and sober and the two gigs he did for us at our local village hall have been highlights of our 30 years of putting on concerts.
