Due to a misunderstanding we have a vacant place at this year's Milford SF writer's conference in lovely North Wales from September 22nd - 29th. It's for published SF writers only (though you only need one sale to a recognised market under your belt to be classed as 'published').

The total price for 2012 is £560 inclusive of full board for seven nights. A deposit of £115 is required to secure your booking and £445 is payable to Trigonos upon attending (by cash or cheque - no cards). Apart from a small Milford admin fee of £10, this sum represents your booking with Trigonos for accommodation.

Full details here: http://www.milfordSF.co.uk/attend.htm

If anyone is disappointed because they thought they'd missed out when we (thought we'd) filled the places and closed the booking - here's your big chance.

Contact: Liz Williams <mevennen@hotmail.com>

I hope someone can fill in the gap.
:-)

Oh how I wish I 1) had money, and 2) was able to write sf without a partner!

I didn't realise you wrote with a partner. How do you work that? I find writing a very solitary activity.

Money aside, it's not like Clarion there's no actual writing to do at Milford, it's all critting of stuff submitted in advance. You can submit up to 15,000 words in one or two pieces (most people submit two). Mornings are allocated for reading time. Afternoons are formal crit sessions and evenings are social time. I find it a great battery re-charger and try to go every year. I've managed 12 out of 15 since 1998 and have been hanging around for so long that I've ended up on the organising committee.

I don't think I'd get much out of Clarion--so much group dynamics and writing on site. Milford sounds like my type of thing, except I am not smart enough to write science fiction, alas.

Well, if I ever get out of this debt hole, I would love to make it a goal. Fresh eyes are so rare and wonderful!

Fantasy is fine too. The "SF" in the name refers to the rather vaguer "speculative fiction" rather than "science fiction". :)

Oh hoh! Keeping that as a goal, then. Thanks.

As Helen said - SF is the blanket term that stands for 'speculative fiction' and our attendees bring everything from fantasy, through hard science fiction to slipstream and occasionally horror. People are short story and novel writers mostly, but we have had SF-nal radio plays, too. YA and children's writing is just as legit as that aimed at adult markets.

Take a look at the website http://www.milfordSF.co.uk

If you are thinking of coming over for London worldcon in 2014 we've moved Milford to August to enable out-of-country writers to do both events on one plane ticket.

Thanks! I'll make it a goal to aim for--there's the matter of an enormous debt, and more outgo than income, alas. But one can always try.
