Does anyone know if DAW e-books (Penguin group) are DRM free or not. There are a couple of books I want but no Kindle editions are on offer on Amazon. DAW sell a digital e-pub version direct from their site which I can convert to mobi for my Kindle reader, but only if it is DRM free. I don't have a reader for e-pub files, so if I buy the books and then discover they are cursed with DRM, I've wasted my money.

I don't know, but I bet if you shot them a query in email they would answer.

I couldn't find an obvious 'mail us with stupid questions' address on their website. Any ideas?

*I* don't know how to do it, but it's allegedly extremely easy to break the DRM so you can use the file on other devices. (Which goes to the heart of why DRM is stupid in the first place: it doesn't slow down the pirates and just creates a hassle for legitimate users.) You might ask around if any tech-savvy friends can help you with this, if there aren't any DRM-free versions available.

Do you have an iPod Touch or iPhone? If so you can read epub files with Stanza. That's what I use on my iPod to read books from Project Gutenberg or Book View Cafe.

I do have an ipod touch but the Kindle is so much kinder on my eyes. I can enlarge type to a comfortable level. If I'm reading for pleasure I don't want to either sit at my desk or struggle with tiny type on a small screen.

I have the font quite large on my iPod, approximately 14 point if it were on the computer screen. You would think that you'd want the iPod in landscape orientation to get the longest line length, but the trick is to hold vertically and read a narrow column of 5 or 6 words in width. You do have to flip the page a lot and my thumb is almost constantly moving, but I really like reading that way.

Book View Cafe does offer Kindle format. I just bought Sherwood Smith's new silver-fork Regency romance from them.

Right. They must have expanded their range of formats because I'm sure that they only had epub at first. Or perhaps I'm not very observant. :)
