jaceyA wilful, irascible heroine with a strong narrative voice; a scar-faced assassin who melts into shadow at the drop of a turban, and a curse that binds them both against their will. What's not to like?
Ananna is the wayward daughter of a pirate family who abandons ship when her parents try to marry her off to the scion of another pirate clan without consulting her first. Unfortunately the scorned in-laws send an assassin after her. Her troubles really start when she saves the assassin's life and ends up bound to him - and vice versa - by a curse. Needless to say they are both pretty disgruntled by the turn of events and set off to try and break the curse by seeking firstly his old flame and then old flame's teacher.
The world-building is excellent. The action moves from port to desert to pirate ship and then to a magical (and dangerous) floating island. There are plenty of twists and turns... but don't expect a conclusion. This is obviously set to be the beginning of a series. I look forward to the next one. Due in 2013, I believe.
