I'm sure Matt Smith is an excellent actor, and I know a lot of people really like his version of the Doctor, but I MUCH preferred Eccleston and Tennant and am really looking forward to seeing Tennant's Doctor (and Rose) in the 50th anniversary episode. Pity they couldn't get Eccleston as well.
I find Smith slightly irritating and while I'm still a fan of the programme in general this season has held some very so-so episodes. I found myself preferring the episode with Vastra, Jenny and Strax because the Doctor was largely absent for the first section.
My daughter will be heartbroken. Matt is her first doctor in some ways, though she was introduced to the series with David Tennant's Doctor. I think she finds Matt Smith younger and more accessible.
I think the new series' companions have been better all around, and the impossible girl is working really well both as a companion, and as a story-line, so far.
I've been watching Doctor Who since the very first episode in 1963, but despite three previous Doctors, my favourite Doc in the old series was always Number Four, Tom Baker, though I did have a fondness for Peter Davidson. I hated Colin Baker and that was when I stopped watching (and also by that time it had moved to a Monday night which was not always convenient). I didn't realise Colin Baker had given way to Sylvester McCoy for some time, but when I discovered, I started watching again. I still like Tom Baker (and I loved Leela as a companion) but the new Who is a better show, especially since it's not in short cliffhanger episodes.
I lived in Norfolk from 67-70, so I think that Patrick Troughton was "my" Doctor. My memories are of him and William Hartnell, who I thought was sort of mean. I don't think that later Doctor Who episodes were much available to me until the late seventies, and my then girlfriend, now wife, would fail to mention Doctor Who episodes when we were talking about what to watch. She just didn't get the series, and will happily miss the new shows as well, though she does watch if I turn them on.
I've been watching the BBC America specials on the Doctors, and I can't even remember the old companions.
I don't remember all the old companions either. Susan, Ian and Barbara were the first ones, and I can remember Jamie - the Scostsman. I think there were more but after that my brain skips to Jo Grant who was a John Pertwee companion, and then, of course, Sarah Jane who spanned the John Pertwee/Tom Baker changeover. I went off to college in 1969 and then got married and we didn't have a TV until around 1973, so I missed chunks of that, but caught some of it when we visited parents.
