In a way it's probably better to write the second novel before you do sell the first, but, of course, you run the risk of wasting time on a sequel that might never see the light of day. I wrote a two parter (never sold) and after that concentrated on singletons, but when I got my book deal the publisher wanted 2 of the singletons and a follow-up novel to one of them. Hence my 'second book' is not actually the second book I've ever written but is a sequel, which presents its own set of problems.
