A remarkably readable popular history, not too deep and academic, but a quick reminder from 15,000 years ago (the Neolithic), through Roman rule, the Dark Ages (Angles, Saxons, Jutes) and the medieval to 1509, the death of Henry VII. This is the first in a six volume set, easily digestible and informative.
Well, as a professional historian, your take on these will vary from mine. I'm interested in history, and reasonably well read on the periods I'm writing about, but I'm not a 'proper' historian. I found Ackroyd's style readable, though I could probably have done without the chapter on Wordsworth and Coleridge.
