Horses Do Not Have Ankles

I'm currently reading The Last Herald Mage trilogy. It's the first Lackey I've ever read and I can't believe that when she's got intelligent, telepthic equine-shaped characters called Companions that she (and her editors and beta-readers) could possibly allow that one to slip past. Horses do not have ankles. They have knees (front) hocks (rear), fetlocks and pasterns.

I can't tell you for sure, because I am ignorant about horses. Probably because I discovered that I was allergic to them at a fairly young age. [Nothing like getting hives on a pony ride to discourage interest in the critters.]
She's comfort reading for me, but I find her best at small scale stuff. The epic stuff doesn't work as well.
