Matt Smith.

My first reaction is that he's way too young. (Age 26) I hope I'm wrong.

He doesn't take over straight away, so he'll be a lot nearer David Tennant's age (the age he was when DT took over I mean). I'm pleased they didn't go for a big name, and I hope we get a more thoughtful doctor but I shall reserve judgement, I think. Am also hoping we don't get another London accent but maybe that's just my prejudices showing.

Tennant was 34 when he got the role - 35 when it began. That's a big difference from 26/27. Eight years makes a lot of difference at that age.

But I was leery about Tennant at first (and I'm still in two minds as to whether I liked Eccleston better) however I was proved utterly wrong abiut Tennant being too young and pretty.

As to whether Ecclestone or Tennant is the better Doctor, I don't think I could ever really decide because they're not competing on a level playing field. Eccleston didn't get three/four seasons and all the subsequent character development and romance with Rose to show what he might have done with the role. He did a lot with his one season, though, including the beginnings of his attraction to Rose. I liked Eccleston's war-damaged Doctor a lot and The Empty Child remains my favourite (double) episode.

Of course that also introduces Captain Jack...
