Captain Abner Marsh is the ugliest riverboat captain on the Mississippi river system, currently devastated by the destruction of most of his steamer fleet, crushed by ice in the recent bleak winter. When pale, steely-eyed Joshua York offers a partnership and a new, fast, powerful river steamer, the Fevre Dream, he accepts, but it turns out that Joshua is not a normal human man. Marsh is eventually let into the big secret about people of the night when Joshua goes up against the evil Damon Julian, bloodmaster, vampire. The struggle is not an easy one, but this has a very satisfactory ending. Ron Donachie reads it well and voices the main characters consistently.
