Penric is challenged when a young Cedonian cavalry officer, who has been blinded, turns up on his doorstep, sent by Pen's brother in law (whose blindness Pen cured in a previous story. The causes of the blinding are not the same, and Pen can do nothing, but... in a small hill village a hedge-sorceress lies dying, so her demon will need another home. Could this give the young officer a chance? Combining medicine with magic is a tricky business, as Pen well knows. Another novella (number 16) .from the Penric and Desdemona series.
