Penric is challenged when a young Cedonian cavalry officer, who has been blinded, turns up on his doorstep, sent by Pen's brother in law (whose blindness Pen cured in a previous story. The causes of the blinding are not the same, and Pen can do nothing, but... in a small hill village a hedge-sorceress lies dying, so her demon will need another home.
