Zulus

I've started working with a theatre, dance and song company called The Mighty Zulu Nation and this afternoon I went along to one of their rehearsals. If I needed reminding (which I didn't) they are beautiful, stirring singers ( a cappella, of course), eloquent storytellers and high-spirited, athletic dancers. I sat there wilth a big silly grin on my face watching and listening.

I'm booking venues for two of their upcoming shows - 'A Zulu Celebration of Christmas' and 'Napoleon Noir' (a play with music).

If you are ever within a hundred miles of these guys make a point of going to see tham.

When I visited my mother in Rwanda I went with her to visit a friend of hers, Rosamund Carr, an American woman who had a ranch there. Roz was an East Coast lady, and while she served us tea the Rwandan dance troupe she sponsored danced for us. They looked a lot like the pictures you have here.

I'm only just pulling the promo together for the shows. The Christmas show will obviously be in December 2009 and 'Napoleon Noir' starts in London for a 2 week run at the Hackney Empire in February - after which it tours to the Virgin Islands and the bit that I'm getting ready to book now is the six weeks following their return, i.e. March 2010 onwards.

In the meantime they are appearing at Tropical Wings zoo (near Chelmsford) on June 27th for their Africa Day; at Chester Zoo - doing outdoor performances throughout the summer and at Broadstrairs Folk Week on Saturday 8th August.

Do you know if they've ever played WOMAD? I think I might have seen them there.
