After the shocking death of her mother in an accident, Max returns to the tiny bookshop in the magical village of Lampton, where she grew up. There are reminders of her mum everywhere, and Max feels wholly inadequate to follow in her mum’s footsteps as bookshop owner, though she knows that’s what her mum really wanted to happen. And then there’s her ex-best friend, Cam, the half-elf who works in the bakery. Max has spent ten years distancing herself but now needs to reconcile. Max has to decide whether to stay in Lampton or to return to her successful accountancy career (and lovely boyfriend) in London. And that’s it, really. It’s a dissection of grief. The storyline is slight, and the pages filled with repeated angst. And did I say there was repeated angst? And there just might have been angst… repeated. Sorry, I fancied reading a cosy story, but picked the wrong one. Not for me.
