Audiobook read by James Marsters (Spike from Buffy) Harry has precipitated a war between the vampires and the wizards for which some members of the White Council would like to see him executed. As if that wasn’t enough his godmother has traded his services to a fairy queen in a deal he can’t get out of.. All he has to do is to find out who murdered the Summer Knight in order to stop a fairy war between the Summer and the Winter courts which could bring about an ice-age. His girlfriend, Susan has run off following events in the previous book, and Harry is both missing her and feeling guilty about what happened to her. In this book he’s helped by Murphy, the Chicago PD officer eho investigates weir stuff, and Billy the werewolf and his pack. Expect Trolls, plant monsters, changelings. There are fairies who can’t tell lies, but they can deceive. James Marsters reads the Dresden books brilliantly.

The third outing for Harry Dresden, the only professional wizard in the Chicago phone book. This is ably read by James Marsters. This book features Harry with a sidekick – Michael, a Christian knight with a magic sword. It appears that Chicago has a ghost problem. And the ghosts are tied to Harry – dangerously tied to Harry. The barrier between the real world and the ghostly one seems to be breaking down. If he doesn’t figure out what’s going on he could end up a ghost himself. Bur it appears that this is also tied up with the Chicago vampires, and Harry’s girlfriend – Susan Rodriguez, an investigative reporter on the trail of all things paranormal, is determined to get in on the act. Lots of Vampires, a twisty plot and, yes, peril. And in addition to all that, Harry’s fairy godmother is chasing him down after he broke a bargain.

I've read this before, but a long time ago. It's the opening book in the long running and much loved Harry Dresden series, about the only wizard in the Chicago phone book. It was fun to revisit as an audiobook, read very nicely by James Marsters (Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but this time with his own American accent). It's a good match for the story as Dresden is called in by Chicago cop, Murphy, to consult on a series of murders which seem to have been committed by magic. It's noir detective meets magic as Dresden's seemingly separate cases come together for a stormy finale.
